The thing is…

Between January and March 2013, the first phase of the project, the thing is…, used performance poetry to empower individuals and give them the freedom and encouragement to tell their stories.

Eight Performance Poets worked for two months with participants from Chard, Taunton, Yeovil and Frome to help them discover their inner poet and rediscover their self-confidence. Over 40 people with mental health or specific learning difficulties took part, writing, recording and performing incredible pieces of original poetry.

*** STOP PRESS... new series of The Thing Is sessions starts this autumn! ***

the thing is… culminated on Tuesday 26 March 2013 with a big celebration performance at the Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre in Taunton, where all four groups came together to share their achievements and perform their work, many of which were accompanied by multi media films and animations.

“I have found a voice I have wanted to get out; there’s no stopping me now.” said Deb, from Chard, who has now gone on to speak on local BBC radio.

Liv Torc, Lead Poet, said that the project “really has been life-changing stuff for everyone involved”.

Annie Crossland, Well Being Project Worker from South Somerset Mind said “I was almost overcome by the level of expression and expertise that was openly shared in the room. WOW what an honour, and what a brilliant tool for us sometimes troubled people to be able to express our inner magic!”
