About Word/Play

Word/Play is a two-year initiative that brings together theatre, spoken word and digital media to create change. It's for people in Somerset: individuals, groups and communities. Anyone, in fact, who wants their voice to be heard, to feel better about themselves or to make a difference in their lives.

WORD/PLAY HAS THREE PHASES...

Phase 1 was called The Thing Is…, and used the spoken word to help individuals make changes in their lives by building their confidence, developing their communication and literacy skills and encouraging them to create and perform new work.

Phase 2 was called Get Over It! and used Forum Theatre to help groups of people bring about behavioural change and develop coping strategies for the tough issues they face.

Phase 3 is split into two projects, focussing on community change: The Whiteball Tunnel and What Change?

Artists: Another feature of Word/Play is the employment opportunities it offers for emerging and established spoken word artists and theatre practitioners. The initiative supports a programme of training, peer support and CPD that will develop artists who live and work across Somerset and the South West region and, hopefully, increase employment opportunities for the future.

Partners: We’re delighted that a range of partners are working with us on Word/Play, so far they are:

We also want to send out a huge thank you to the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and the Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales for supporting Word/Play.
