The Tongues of Fire are a unique band making a 'joyful noise' for dreaming, dancing and celebration. Their village band line up features trumpet, trombone, saxes, sousaphone/double bass and drums and plays a rich blend of jazz and new arrangements of traditional English material with spicings of circus music and global street band. Tongues of Fire was founded in 2004 by saxophonist Tim Hill, who lives in Somerset, and features musicians drawn from the worlds of free jazz, brass bands, contemporary classical, theatre and samba. In the last three years the band has brought out an acclaimed single, Smokin' Jo Crow on Nanny Tango records, and has played a wide range of festivals and events including the Cheltenham Music Festival, Salisbury and Harrogate Festivals, the Durham Brass Festival and leading a torchlit procession of 10,000 people to Hadrian's Wall this March. Bandleader Tim Hill and trombonist Phil Humphries also play in the Mellstock band, a band well known for its recreations of eighteenth and nineteenth century village music. "They fire up an unholy modal roustabout of a party. Blindingly good." International DJ magazine
