Help support take art

Take Art is a unique, magical, life-changing organisation that doesn't live in a venue, or studio or a whacking great theatre but in the villages, towns and rural communities of Somerset.

Every year we work with over 15,000 people across the county, providing opportunities for all ages and abilities to experience, participate and work within the arts.

This year we need to raise £10,000 to Keep Take Art in Somerset! Watch this short film to find out more.

How you can help

Take Art: Because we're worth it…

Take Art has been working, singing and doing the splits in Somerset for 25 years, long enough to build real relationships with communities, artists and audiences. We are an arts organisation without physical limitations: lithe, sinewy, adaptable and transmutable - able to shape shift into any venue, village hall, school and community centre.

From our hub in South Petherton we run one of the UK's most celebrated rural touring schemes and services in dance, theatre, music and early years creativity.

Every year we provide performance and workshop opportunities for thousands of children, young people, adults, older people and vulnerable groups. Through our work we seek to educate, inform national practice, improve self-esteem, empower, build empathy, careers, happiness as well as physical and mental well-being.

We don't wait for the people to come to us, we go out to where the people live and transform lives and communities through the arts.

So what's the problem

Last year the region lost 100% of its County Council funding, you probably heard all about it on the TV or read about it in the Guardian - after all they were the worst arts funding cuts in the UK. To compound the crisis, only two Somerset arts organisations received Arts Council Portfolio funding and tens of thousands of arts designated pounds were stripped from District funds.

In the aftermath of all the cuts, Take Art lost £70,000, a third of our regular income, which might not seem much in the grand scheme of things but we make a little go a long long way. In fact that £70,000 loss was pretty devastating to our vital work within the county. We basically had to cut our rural touring programme in half, going from 120 shows a year to less than 60.

Fortunately thanks to continuing support from the Arts Council of England as well as South Somerset District Council, Taunton Deane District Council and ArtLife - Take Art is still here, alive, acting and reacting - doing fantastic work in dance, theatre, early years, rural touring and music.

Breaking it down...

You can donate any amount you like but here are
some ideas on how the donations break down.

  • £10 will get a young person performing on a stage for the first time
  • £20 will provide a child under five with a creative workshop place
  • £25 will enable us to bring dance or theatre to an older person in a residential home or reach someone with a disability
  • £250 will enable a young person to take part in a 10-week course with a professional musician or artist
  • £500 will help us bring a high quality theatre, dance or music show to a rural venue
