Emma Hutchinson

Bio

Emma's teaching and training evolved from her study in music, dance and theatre, achieving an MA in early childhood music. Her career combines instrumental with music and movement to provide young children and babies with rich and live musical experiences that in turn are beneficial to language, life skills and developing the Whole Child.

Emma founded The Music House for Children in 1994, providing lessons, workshops and concerts for young children, babies and primary ages, along with training for educators and Early Years teams. She also coordinates studies to confirm the significance of music in supporting children with a range of needs.

For SoundWaves Extra Emma has been working with Flying Start Children’s centre in Exeter to nurture language development in multi-cultural families and up-skill the workforce in music delivery. She is also currently working with TOG in Taunton to develop vocalising in young children with autism and emerging needs, and to encourage sustainable music delivery by the workforce.

Both are a joy, and rich in shared skills for all involved.

Vicky Meadows

  • Role
    Soundwaves Extra practitioner
Bio

As both a musician and an early years teacher Vicky has developed her skills as an Early Years Music Specialist over the past twenty years.

Since 2000 as a member of Play it! I have participated in several Early Years music projects in and around Bristol. This has involved leading music sessions and trainings for under fives and Early Years practitioners in Children’s Centres and Primary Schools. Play It! has also produced three children’s CDs.

For the past ten years she has been a music specialist on the staff at St Paul’s Children’s Centre in Bristol who focus on working with families with English as an Additional Language. In 2014 the children participated in an action research project studying their Innate Musicality.

Vicky has recently been part of a SoundWaves Extra project at Badocks Wood Children’s Centre looking at the effects of music on young children’s emotional well being.

Rachel Thame

Bio

As an Early Years music facilitator Rachel spends her time working across a diverse range of environments and settings, from foundation units within primary schools, pre-schools and community centres, to centres for vulnerable families in crisis staying within women’s refuge centres. She is convinced of the power of music to connect, communicate and spread happiness.

Rachel believes in enabling young children to connect through positive musical experiences, helping them to develop a passion for music and building confidence and self-esteem.

As a key trainer for Early Years Music provision in the South West, she enjoys running courses and workshops for teachers and communities to generate support and understanding regarding the importance of music in child development and within Early Years education.

She believes that musical play is a birthright for us all, and encouraging adults to embrace this within themselves as well as being able to positively support their child’s musical play is always her main objective.

For SoundWaves Extra, she has recently been running a musical play session called Ahoy for military families and their young children in Plymouth.  Meeting every week to create music, make noise together and promote joyful play has helped develop meaningful connections and support within this unique community and has been hugely rewarding.

Bill Roberts

Bio

Bill Roberts makes music in the moment with children, starting with fun and responding to their play and ideas. His key skills are flexibility and empathy, using intuition and experience to decide what to go with next.

Bill has been making music with children for 30 years. Along the way he's been a psychotherapist and trained on the Goldsmiths Community Music course. Since 2000 he has directed Play It, leading many multi-setting projects and trainings and recording three acclaimed children’s CDs. Since 2005 Bill has developed and led Mood Music, which supports children’s emotional development through music.

Bill has a close connection with Redcliffe Children’s Centre in Bristol, and with them he has led Music In The Forest, demonstrating the benefits of making music outdoors.

Bill is currently working on SoundWaves Extra at Knowle West Children’s Centre, Bristol, where a key feature has been most of the staff playing ukuleles.

Joanna Harvey

Bio

JOANNA HARVEY

I’ve been doing music projects with Early Years for about 8 years now, working in all kinds of settings – nurseries, children’s centres, groups with parents and families. We explore music in all sorts of ways – with voices, instruments and bodies. I play a few instruments myself – guitar, violin, melodica, ukulele, which I bring to sessions and play and/or let the children try. I also have a huge collection of instruments we can all play together – a gathering drum, xylophones and balafons, tuned bells, as well as more obvious pre-school instruments like ethnic percussion, claves, shaky eggs, castanets etc.

Children love singing along to a guitar or ukulele and I’ve collected a wide range of songs for various activities, moods and seasons – songs for moving and dancing to, fun songs, songs that encourage listening, call and response, songs that are just beautiful and soothing. My passion is world music and I include lots of songs and instruments from around the world.

My biggest Early Years project to date was ‘Music Speaks’, which had a focus on supporting communication and language and music in the home. Integral to this was a cd I made with some excellent local musicians which has been incredibly popular with children, staff and parents. http://www.youthmusic.org.uk/what-we-do/news/how-making-music-helped-bethany-find-her-voice.html
My latest project is Singsong Birdsong with Ignite Somerset, where I’ll be working with pre-school and primary children, listening to the natural sounds of Summer and encouraging them to reinterpret those sounds (especially birdsong) with instruments and their voices. http://ignitesomerset.com/soundmusic/

Early Years are great to work with because young children just LOVE music, singing, moving, exploring their senses. Music is such a fun medium to be working with at this stage, and I really feel I’m making a true connection with the children (and adults) I work with. I come away from nearly every session feeling lighter, joyful, deeply fulfilled. These are the things that inspire me: the sense of connection music can bring through expressing ourselves and our feelings, the beauty of it, the love and joy in it.

I offer projects and workshops for all Early Years settings and groups, from babies to primary school children. Activities include songs to support communication and language, listening and developing confidence, exploring instruments and playing together, seasonal songs, ‘Festivals of Light’ (multicultural music and songs for winter festivals), movement and dance, music and story.

I also provide training for pre school staff in all aspects of Early Years music, including a popular beginners’ ukulele and guitar course with resources, for staff to support and enhance singing in their settings.
