In Spring 2011, 21 primary schools participated in an award-winning Theatre-in-Education project that used theatre as a way of exploring healthy relationships, raise self-esteem and celebrate differences.
The SPACE Healthy Relationships TiE project represents a unique partnership between the SPACE, The Somerset Performing Arts Centre for Education, Healthy Schools Somerset and Take Art. It follows on from the success of last year's pilot project which toured to 12 primary schools.
The project, nominated for the Somerset Education Business Awards 2011, was the winner of the post-16 category.??Students from The SPACE formed seven theatre companies to devise and rehearse seven different performances. In March 2011 these productions then toured to 21 Somerset primary schools where the children had the opportunity to participate in a drama workshop following each performance.
The project supported a programme of work developed by Healthy Schools Somerset to promote healthy relationships in primary and middle schools.
Teresa Day, Sex and Relationships Education Advisor, who worked on the project both to outline the brief and to advise the students about healthy relationships, expressed her delight at how imaginatively the students tackled the subject. “It has been a real pleasure to work with The SPACE students - they have worked hard, and with incredible flair and imagination, to bring this key subject area to life. The tour is of real benefit to the schools and young children who participate.”
The project was supported by Take Art Theatre, who helped to devise the brief and encourage the students as they developed their work.
Mark Helyar, Co-Director of Take Art Theatre said, “We are delighted by the way that The SPACE students have responded to the project brief to produce an engaging set of performances. Working in partnership with Healthy Schools Somerset has added tremendous value and relevance to the project.”
"The SPACE Company are thrilled and very proud to be interacting and working with Take Art Theatre and Healthy Schools Somerset on such a worthwhile project. "
