  Tide and Time

Tide and Time was a unique project that brought artists and communities together to explore the rich diversity of the South-west coast. With funding from the Arts Council and a variety of other organisations it was developed by four arts organisations in the South-west: Take Art in Somerset, Village in Action in Devon, The Works in Cornwall and Artsreach in Dorset.

As a seafaring region our relationship to the sea is strong. It has protected us in times of war; offered trading routes to the world; provided a rich source of food and resources; attracted tourists and holiday-makers; it has inspired our artists, musicians and writers and given us challenging sport or peaceful contemplation.

Our relationship with the sea is however both complex and constantly changing. Second homes, fishing quotas, environmental changes, tourism and information technology are just a few of the factors affecting our coastal communities.

Tide and Time offered emerging and established artists, residents and visitors around the South-west coast the opportunity to explore some of these changes. From 'Crab Walking' in Babbacombe to singing sea shanties on Portland Bill, the projects gave people ways to explore our coast like never before. Exploring the rich diversity of this coastal landscape the projects have included dance, creative writing, film, visual art, digital arts, sound walks, music, singing and many interesting collaborations between artists.

In addition to the participatory projects, Tide and Time also comissioned a film that captured an overarching perspective of the South-west coast. A successful partnership with the South West Coast Path Association and Team enabled a Performance on the Path in each region and a photographic project. Armed with a digital camera, two intrepid individuals walked the entire coast path and took a photograph at noon, wherever they were, whatever they were doing.
